Daniel I. Beck

Daniel I. Beck

As Managing Partner of Synapse Partners, LLC, Daniel Beck has grown Synapse into one of the largest and most respected environmental wholesale insurance firms in the industry.

Dan saw the need within the retail brokerage arena for specialized, technically-competent environmental insurance services delivered from a wholesale platform. Since joining Synapse in 2005, Dan has been responsible for the overall management and growth of the company’s insurance operations while personally producing Synapse’s largest book of business. Dan was also the vision behind CentralisTM, Synapse’s proprietary database management system. Recognizing the value and power of data, Dan’s vision has captured Synapse’s environmental market data over the past 15 years and created an industry-leading tool to enhance Synapse’s impact for its broker partners and insured clients.

Dan began his professional career at American International Group (AIG), where he rapidly rose through the underwriting ranks into national leadership positions. He has been with Synapse since 2005, and maintains a consistent focus on the development of Synapse's culture and attracting the most talented and experienced technical specialists in the environmental insurance industry.

Dan enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, coaching youth football, and live music.

Ken C. Burrell

Ken Burrell has over twenty years of experience in the environmental insurance and consulting industries. He currently leads the Southeast region in addition to the expansion of Synapse Services’ footprint throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Prior to joining Synapse Services, Mr. Burrell was the Executive Vice President and division head of the Corporate Accounts division of AIG Environmental, a $700m division. His responsibilities included oversight of new business production, renewal retention, profitability, human resource management and day-to-day operations of the Corporate Accounts business segment including 15 regional offices, and pollution and casualty product lines.

Mr. Burrell rapidly rose through the ranks having held various regional underwriting and management positions within AIG Environmental, in both the Corporate Accounts and National Accounts business segments. In these positions, he structured numerous environmental insurance placements covering diverse environmental and casualty risks. Mr. Burrell negotiated insurance programs for many of the nation’s largest environmental consulting, contracting and waste management companies. He was also responsible for the underwriting oversight of numerous high profile projects including, The NY World Trade Center redevelopment and The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, GA.

Prior to entering the insurance field, Mr. Burrell served as was an Environmental Geologist and Project Manager with an Atlanta-based environmental engineering firm, where he was responsible for business development, technical oversight of environmental site assessments, site characterizations and remediation projects for regional and Fortune 500 clients.

Mr. Burrell holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Environmental Geology from Georgia State University, and is a frequent speaker at insurance trade and environmental technical conferences.

Vita DeMarchi

Vita DeMarchi

Ms. DeMarchi is the Managing Partner at Synapse Partners. Ms. DeMarchi has been involved in assessing environmental conditions, evaluating risk, and developing and implementing strategies to address environmental conditions at thousand of real properties, operating facilities and for corporations throughout the US. As a Risk Manager, she has provided clients with the benefit of her expertise and ability to assimilate material fact contained in reports prepared by engineering and consulting firms, forensic analytical data, regulatory and legal documents, and then develops business solutions that match the risk appetite of individual clients and partners. She has provided underwriting support for environmental insurance submittals and financial transactions.

Ms. DeMarchi is a Co-Founder and Director of a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization - Synapse Sustainability Trust, which has fostered four environmental initiatives: Universal Brownfield Revitalization Corporation, CuseCar, EvPlugSite, and Restoration Tree Trust. Ms. DeMarchi has the honor to serve as the Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Brian Macrae

Brian Macrae

Brian is a Managing Partner at Synapse since 2008 and is one of Synapse’s founding employees. Over the past 25 years, Brian has successfully combined his strong business acumen with an extensive technical understanding of complex environmental exposures. Brian's retail partners leverage his specialized knowledge to facilitate risk transfer and transactional closings throughout the US for a diverse array of industries. As a technical insurance producer, Brian draws upon his risk management and consulting expertise to assess, manage and transfer environmental liabilities for retail brokers and their insureds.

Brian began his career in the corporate sector with Unisys’ Corporate Environmental Affairs group. He subsequently went on to provide environmental risk management solutions on commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, real estate development, commercial lending, brownfield redevelopment RCRA and State Superfund sites. In his personal time, Brian enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, and enjoying the outdoors, from the state park trails near his home to his hometown beach on Long Island.

Brian earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Clarkson University and a Finance MBA from the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University.

A ground-breaking member of the Synapse Services Team, Account Executive Lauren Rosie, launched our presence in the Nashville Region in 2018. Forming new broker relationships while serving a client-base in Construction (GC and Artisan Contractors), Demolition, Environmental Contractors/Consultants, Emergency Response Contractors, Chemical Manufacturers/Distributors, Lauren is a key component to the success of our operation.

Coming to Synapse with professional experience in Risk Management and Insurance, Lauren’s achieved her CPCU designation in 2016. Her technical knowledge and unmatched levels of responsiveness, and efficiency, along with her keen attention to detail, assists our valued clients in countless ways. Lauren’s ability to understand and scrutinize policy language and the detailed operations and of an insured enable her to craft comprehensive coverage language to cover environmental exposures that were previously unavailable in the marketplace.

Pet owner and volunteer at the Nashville Humane Association, Lauren is an animal lover who enjoys exploring food and culture all over the globe.

Keith Aubert brings valued retail brokerage and claims management experience having begun his insurance career as a retail broker and claims assistant at Lockton Insurance. Keith’s first-hand knowledge and experience working with Energy, Construction, Manufacturing, Real Estate & Hospitality industries provide him with a deep understanding of a brokers and insured’s expectations and timeframes.

His understanding of how to navigate complex claims, often directly alongside an insured, provide Keith with skills that synchronize seamlessly with Synapse’s committed practice of supporting our retail broker partners from production through claims advocacy.

Upon joining the Synapse team, Keith has been prominent in assisting retail agents target new business accounts, adding great influence and value from the synthesis of the deal for which he takes great pride.

Meryl Corsun

Meryl Corsun landed at Synapse as an environmental risk manager where she spent 5 years advising clients on avoiding, mitigating and managing risk. Through her aptitude for traditional environmental consulting, along with the planning and implementation of risk and energy management strategies, Meryl became an esteemed asset to our client base.  

Strategizing with owners, developers, and their insurance brokers, Meryl managed the risk associated with environmentally impaired properties from purchase and redevelopment, through ongoing ownership and divestiture. Meryl also facilitated the financing of clients’ projects through grant writing and funding procurement from both public and private programs.

In 2016, Meryl leveraged her technical capabilities in the insurance marketing side of Synapse Services. Her hands-on experience as an environmental scientist provides a solid foundation in her ability to understand and assess complex engineering data, which is vital to the effective transfer of environmental risk.  A NYS licensed broker, Meryl supports Northeast operations through marketing and servicing new and renewal accounts.

Meryl serves on the Board of Directors of Greening USA, a Syracuse-based non-profit focused on promoting sustainable ideas for the benefit of the economy and environment. 

Meryl graduated Summa Cum Laude from State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry where she earned her B.S. in Environmental Science with a focus on Renewable Energy and Economics & Development.

Brendan Cotter

Brendan Cotter

Mr. Cotter serves as in-house counsel to the Synapse Partners family of companies.  Mr. Cotter provides professional support services to the Synapse Services group, implementing a multi-state insurance licensing program and heading a regulatory compliance team for that entity.  As an associate of Synapse Risk Management, Mr. Cotter provides property transaction support and environmental risk management services, working with clients and their legal counsel to facilitate investment in environmentally impaired real estate.

Mr. Cotter also provides professional support services to Synapse Sustainability Trust, Inc., a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization.  In that capacity, Mr. Cotter has assisted in the implementation of a variety of sustainable initiatives, including CuseCar, the Universal Brownfield Revitalization Corporation and the Restoration Tree Trust.

Michelle D’Imperio, CPA, has joined the Synapse Team as Chief Accounting Officer. Mrs. D’Imperio provides in house professional accounting service in support of Synapse’s various operating companies and real-estate holdings.

Mrs. D’Imperio is a member of the New York State Society of Public Accountants, as well as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  

Mrs. D’Imperio comes with 14 years of experience in the accounting field, and was a graduate of Alfred University.

Michael S. Gill

Michael Gill leads the South-Central Region of Synapse Services, LLC. Mike’s expertise at negotiating complex environmental insurance placements, managing high profile insurance portfolios, and aligning Synapse’s growth strategies with the retail production success has made him an integral part of Synapse's leadership team. Mike and his team produce and service diverse accounts across a wide range of industries including:

Mike began his career at AIG Environmental, where he quickly ascended from Senior Underwriter in Boston, to leading teams in San Francisco and New York. At AIG, Mike developed nationwide relationships across the retail broker community. Among Mike’s most noteworthy achievements is the development of the environmental insurance program for the New York World Trade Center Redevelopment.

Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, Mike relocated to New Orleans to launch Ironshore Insurance Company’s Gulf Coast office. Under Mike’s stewardship, his combined territory grew to over $50 million in gross written premium in five years with a significant focus in Energy industry accounts.

During Mike’s time at Synapse he established a mission called ReSet, a 501(c) (3) non-profit which raises money to support rebuilding homes in Louisiana post a catastrophic event.

Betsy Kettells Grondzki

Ms. Grondzki has over sixteen years of experience in the environmental insurance industry. Betsy began her career at AIG and then ACE USA as an environmental underwriter where she wrote contractors and fixed site pollution accounts. Her underwriting background provided a strong foundation for her transition to Synapse Services where her current responsibilities include insurance marketing and distribution expansion in the southeast region.

Betsy's strong relationships, multi-line coverage experience and understanding of her clients unique exposures empower her to bring creative and effective coverage solutions to her clients. Her industry relationships and depth of underwriting knowledge, has resulted in strong retail brokerage partnerships where she has become a trusted resource in developing environmental risk management strategies for her clients.

Randy Hampton is an Executive Vice President with Synapse Services, LLC bringing 25 years of diverse insurance brokerage experience.
Randy specializes in difficult placements which require unique solutions, and heads up Synapse’s Specialty Stock Throughput and Cyber and Privacy Liability focuses. Randy takes a holistic view of risk, looking at it enterprise-wide through his broad experience in the design and management of complex property and casualty placements by focusing on loss sensitive and alternative risk financing programs.

Randy’s professional experience includes 14 years as a Senior Vice President for McGriff, Seibels & Williams, Inc. where his responsibilities included marketing and servicing of large national and multi-national risk management clients. During his time at McGriff, clients wrote he “brings to the table a results driven attitude along with honesty and integrity to provide outstanding customer service and partners with you to ensure your results and objectives are his results as well”.

Randy began his career with Willis of Georgia as Director of Marketing overseeing carrier relationships and program marketing. After three years, he was promoted to Senior Vice President with his responsibilities transitioning to the procurement and servicing of clients.
He is a proud graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in Risk Management and Insurance.

Dave Haverkamp

Dave Haverkamp

Dave Haverkamp, brings over 20 years of environmental and professional liability underwriting and brokerage experience to his brokers. In his return to the Western Region where he spent more than half his career, Dave brings his expansive technical knowledge, international network of underwriting relationships and resources to his clients in the Energy, Construction, Manufacturing and Real Estate industries.

Formerly at AIG, Dave managed divisions in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He later went on to develop the Southeast Regional Office for Aspen Specialty’s Environmental Division. As their national product line specialist for the Contractor's Professional & Pollution product, Dave created underwriting guidelines, pricing models and policy forms.

Dave’s in depth understanding of environmental liability comes from his experiences in these senior underwriting roles. Dave combined his strong underwriting background with technical brokerage skills he developed while leading the environmental resource group at IMA of Colorado. Dave relies on his technical foundation when crafting coverage language for his client’s exposures.

Dave enjoys hiking, biking and adventure seeking in his Airstream travel trailer with wife Sarah, and their two wonderfully energetic children.

Max Kenion, Account Manager for Synapse Services is based in New Orleans. Max designs and places insurance programs for complex commercial and industrial clients.

Max comes to Synapse from Ironshore Insurance where he began his career as a Production Specialist responsible for underwriting combined pollution / casualty products. In this role Max built a multi-million-dollar casualty book and loyal with Retailers and Wholesalers alike.

Max has deep and broad experience within the industrial, energy, chemical and coatings sectors. His technical expertise provides retail partners with broad coverage solutions in a rapidly changing Environmental Insurance market

Prior to the Insurance industry, Max graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications. While there he was also member of Alpha Epsilon Pi and has spent his spare time tutoring students and creating curriculums for Hope Partnership for Education.

Ms. Macisak brings expertise in Finance / Accounting / Auditing to her role as Administrative Manager at Synapse. Ms. Macisak joined the Synapse Georgia office in 2010. She supports our producers through account and renewal management, client invoicing, and policy review. Ms. Macisak manages the Synapse Surplus Lines process, being responsible for compliance, reporting and filings. Her financial skills help Synapse with reporting and forecasting, renewal analysis, and business trending analysis. Her ability to originate and integrate process, communication effectively across the company, and prompt response makes Jenn a vital team member. Additionally, Jenn serves as the Georgia office Manager, coordinating numerous administrative functions for the Partners and her co-workers. Ms. Macisak is also a graduate of the University of Georgia.

Elizabeth McAlpin is an Account Executive focused on specialty products with an emphasis on Stock Throughput, Pollution Liability, Real Estate and Hospitality products.

Licensed in Property Casualty Insurance, Liz has been in the industry since 1989, bringing multi-line underwriting expertise on the carrier experience and brokerage experience on the Agency. Beginning her career in Commercial Lines Marketing for Palmer & Cay and then transitioning to an Account Executive for the Travelers Commercial Accounts Team, Liz’s strong understanding of exposures and risk combined with her excellent carrier and agency relationships, makes her a valued asset to Synapse’s clients and their insureds.

A graduate of the University of Georgia, Liz prides herself on being active in her local community and is known to indulge in golf and tennis in her spare time.

For over a decade Tom Murchio has performed technical Environmental brokerage on Synapse’s largest and most complex accounts.  Tom brings a sophisticated risk management approach to his brokerage relationships, offering a broad range of skills related to the identification, quantification and transfer of environmental risks in commercial operations.

Tom’s broad industry experiences include Energy, Construction, Healthcare, Hospitality, Municipal, Manufacturing, Real Estate, Distribution, Professional Services and Private Equity funded transactions. 

Tom began his career as an environmental consultant where he learned firsthand, about complex environmental conditions through performing field work on Phase I, II, and III projects. In this role, Tom gained a deep understanding of environmental liability and how to identify and quantify environmental exposures.   

In 2003, Tom transitioned his career into insurance underwriting at AIG Environmental, Inc where he became a Senior Environmental Underwriter. At AIG, Tom gained a reputation for crafting tailored environmental solutions for private equity-related real estate developers, large scale manufacturers, and prominent Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT’s).

Tom is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder and is an alumnus of the President’s Leadership Class. He holds a BA in Environmental Science, with a focus on public policy and planning. In 2006, Tom completed the Environmental Risk Management Program. He is a licensed Property and Casualty Broker.

Thomas Orabona

Tom Orabona is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable environmental specialists in the industry. Tom joined Synapse in 2016, after a 23 year career at AIG Environmental where he was responsible for the EAGLE product along with 15 regional underwriting offices focusing on environmental casualty, excess, and automobile for AIG’s corporate, middle market and most visible national accounts.

In his role as senior executive for the EAGLE product, he underwrote accounts, supervised underwriters, Tom was in the weeds on every claim for the past 15 years. From how AIG interpreted coverage language, through payment, all fell under his responsibility. His role gave him an unmatched viewpoint on the appetite and internal deliberations of the largest book of combined form business.

Tom knows what technical coverage enhancements can be negotiated. He has customized coverage for a wide array of manufacturers, distributers and process operations. Tom understands carrier appetite down to the individual underwriter at each carrier. Many of which worked for and were trained by him at AIG.

As Vice President for Synapse Services Greg brings an extensive interdisciplinary background as an environmental scientist, underwriter, retail & wholesale broker to his clients in the Real Estate, Construction, Manufacturing & Distribution industries.

Greg began his career as an environmental specialist conducting research and performing investigations to identify and eliminate sources of pollutants and hazards affecting the environment and overall health of the population. His field experience provides the technical foundation from which Greg draws upon when analyzing and crafting tailored coverage programs for insureds.

Greg launched his environmental insurance career at AIG Environmental as an Underwriter/Risk Analyst. This training and experience provided the foundation for his transition to retail brokerage at Aon Risk Services in 2002. At AON Greg spearheaded both the Environmental Construction Services and Environmental Mergers & Acquisition capabilities where he was the lead environmental resource on AON’s largest and most complex accounts including the first bio terrorism policy for the Empire State Building, post September 11th. In 2007, Greg transitioned over to the wholesale brokerage side of the business at Crump Insurance where he led the Environmental Services Group, supporting hundreds of retail brokers and insureds on their environmental placements.

Since joining the Synapse team in 2007, Greg differentiates himself through his long-standing carrier relationships, extensive coverage knowledge and ability to utilize insurance and other risk management tools to manage environmental liabilities for many of Synapse’s largest and most complex risks. In his free time, Greg enjoys coaching youth soccer and challenging himself through cross-fit and military/special forces inspired training.

Eckardt C. Beck served two United States Presidents, receiving the President's Distinctive Service Award for Chairing the National Toxic Strategy while serving as Assistant Administrator in USEPA running the National Water and Waste Programs.  He chaired the Environment Committee for the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development where he collaborated with the Ministers of the Environment from 21 countries.

Mr. Beck was a Co-Founder and is the Managing Partner Emeritus of Synapse Partners, one of the largest aggregators of environmental insurance in the USA, operating in 50 states, serving 43 major carriers.

A former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Emerson College, Mr. Beck has founded, chaired and served as CEO of numerous environmental public companies.  .

Mr. Beck is a Founder of and the inspiration behind Synapse Sustainability Trust, a not for profit 501C3 Corporation which has fostered such initiatives as UBRC, CuseCar, Restoration Tree Trust, Energy21Symposium, EvPass, and FacetsROI.  He is a Director Emeritus of Synapse Sustainability Trust .

Most recently, Mr. Beck was a cofounder and serves on the Executive Committee of 3Gi Terminals LLC., the intermodal transportation developer of entities such as the Central New York Inland Port.
