Sarah Stephens Supports Development to Reopen Historic Hotel in Downtown Syracuse

It was a fitting event for what the city of Syracuse has been anticipating for some time.

"We're open. You can come here for lunch; you can come here for dinner," said Ed Reilly, the owner of the new Marriott Downtown Syracuse. "We even serve drinks here once in a while."

The iconic Hotel Syracuse officially reopened for business Friday as the Marriott Syracuse Downtown. Renovated inside the former 1921 building, it's now operating as a hotel for the first time since 2003.

City residents like Sarah Stephens have fond memories of the original Hotel Syracuse. "I actually was married here and had my reception in the grand ballroom, kind of in that in between stage when they were starting to do some renovations, but then unfortunately had stopped," said Stephens, a project leader who assisted in the hotel's reopening.

"This hotel coming back is so integral to the breathing in of new life in our community, bringing back, and it goes to show that we don't give up."

While many city leaders and residents have fond memories of the former Hotel Syracuse, they're elated to know that they'll continue to see those memories come to life in rooms like this.

"My husband and I have already talked about celebrating our 10th anniversary here in the grand ballroom," Stephens said.
